Why Do You Need Transient Voltage Surge Suppression (TVSS)?

At Pieper, we are often asked what TVSS is and why it’s needed. Others may refer to these devices as a voltage or lighting arrestor, but they are not the new sheriff in town and arrest nothing, nor are they simply a “lightning protection device.

A properly designed TVSS unit redirects voltage surges to the ground. Surges of voltage can come from many places and quite often come from motors and equipment within the very building you are trying to protect.

For example, we had a client who had an elevator motor that was inducing surge voltage into the building system and would damage the sensitive cardio testing equipment (always at the most inopportune times of course). Further investigation found that a building addition had been completed and the steel structures had not been bonded together properly. The combination of improper grounding and lack of TVSS wreaked havoc throughout the building.

To solve problems like this, Pieper has the power monitoring equipment to assist with evaluating and designing proper TVSS protection for your building. Call our service department at 713.984.9342 and see if your building has the proper TVSS protection for your application.
